Competition/festival – closing date 21 June

Made in Greenwich Gallery in collaboration with local publisher Cherry Potts of Arachne Press, are organising a festival of poetry and other work on the theme ‘Shortest Day’ (to be held on 21 December) with a competition to contribute poems. It’s in two parts, with details of part 1 below:

– Poems: Maximum of 1000 words – preference will tend to be for shorter pieces in which it is felt that “every word counts”. Poems (or stories) must be written in English and be the person’s own unaided original and unpublished work.

They will select work from poems submitted by 21 June (and do the same with musical entries) and then ask people to respond to the pieces selected with a poem. Those whose poetry doesn’t get into first cut could still submit something for this second stage which will end 31 August -more information nearer the time).

–  Entries are welcome from Deaf writers. They also welcome entries from blind writers.

To submit and for more information, see their website: https://arachnepress.submittable.com/submit

Greenwich Book Festival 27-28th May in SE10

Poetry events South & Southeast London

A ‘haiku Valentine’ workshop

Fancy writing a haiku to celebrate Valentine’s day? You could attend the haiku workshop offered by Poetry Network Southeast London, at a Greenwich gallery. The theme is ‘A Valentine’ for nature, so you could write a haiku expressing some feeling about or facet of nature, and learn to write or improve your writing of haiku.

Led by local poets, the workshop will involve reading existing haiku by well known poets, considering what makes an effective haiku, and having a go at your own. Techniques like cut-ups of prose writing and playing ‘haiku consequences’ will help you expand your writing options – and have fun.

It’s in SE10 on Thursday 11 February at 7.30 pm and further details are available on website http://www.madeingreenwich.co.uk

Or by signing up to the (FREE) Poetry Newsletter Southeast London (PNSeL eNEWS) by emailing ‘subscribe’ to: pnsel.enews@yahoo.co.uk
